Don’t Judge Me

Sometimes you need to use the “unfriend” button on Facebook.  Sometimes, it’s with family.

That’s what I felt I needed to do this morning.  Why?  They believe it is their job to judge me, or anyone who isn’t in their particular prayer circle jerk.  That is, judge my christian or non-christian beliefs.  Condemn me to HELL.  They so firmly believe that only their viewpoint is correct and all the rest of us are heathens whose souls will burn in an eternal fire.

First of all, even though we are related, we have never met.  So basically, we don’t know each other.  They do not know how many times I have extended my hand to help others.  They have no idea of the lengths I will go through to offer what I can to help someone out.  If I have the resources, and sometimes not, I will help out.  I don’t care if you are a Catholic, Jew, Muslim or atheist.  I will not judge someone who believes differently than me, but I will help when I can.

Second, this all started because of a simple reply to their post:  “There is not one single more loving act than to warn a person of eternal hell.”  I replied “actually I’m OK with not being warned.”  It got worse from there.

It was the following post though that finally made me decide to just eliminate these people from my life.  I mean I already have enough stress without worrying about my eternal damnation.

“Jesus spoke 3x more about hell than heaven you should read your Bible more.
Obviously you do not have the spirit of God, you want to keep your sin and expect Jesus to accept you.
I’m afraid you and George wont be seeing me in hell although I AM sure you will end up there unless you repent.
You obviously are worshiping a false God a Jesus you have made up in your own mind.
You have no fear of God but see him as a limp wristed pot smoking tree hugging hippy child.
You call yourself a ‘christian’ but by your statements you condemn yourself as the furthest thing from one.
“But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear Him, which after He hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear Him.” – Luke 12:5

Finally, it was additional posts in this string of like-minded individuals in their condemnation of me and also my Catholic Faith, (not that I’m a strong practicing one) that made me decide I just don’t need people like this in my life.

So they can be free to practice what they believe.  They’ll just have one less person to preach to from their pulpit.

Put me on the side of President Obama in support of Gay Marriage.  I think that tolerance should include all. Everyone, regardless of gender, race, religion or lack thereof.  Who a person loves shouldn’t make any difference to you or me.  It should only matter to them.  But apparently there are those people who seem to know what’s best for everyone, and they use the Bible to justify their hate and bigotry.

I was raised a Catholic but I have to admit I’m not a good one.  I’ve gotten discouraged with organized religion. Which one is correct?  Catholicism?  Buddhism?  Baptists, Lutherans, Jews, Muslims, Mormon, Hinduism?  So the answer for me is that the only religion is the religion of God.  Whoever he/she is.  The God I chose to believe in could be the same God that all religions worship, but by a different name.

Does my God hate Gay and Lesbian people.  Nope, I’m pretty sure he loves them as much as the narrow-minded bigot who professes that God wants them killed.

I have never read the Bible and have no intentions of ever reading it.  I don’t want my judgement about being tolerant of other people clouded by what some mortal men wrote centuries ago.  Just as I don’t want to be influenced today by people interpreting the passages of the Bible to slant it to their point of view.

My Facebook page has several posts daily about God and Religion and that’s fine.  You have the right to believe as you feel your Faith dictates.  It doesn’t however, give you the right to try to condemn me to Hell (if such a place exists) because I don’t conform to your beliefs.  What you don’t have the right to do is to write posts that are hateful to people who think and act differently than you.  All that does is to show others how ungodly you really are.

Not too many years ago, half the States had laws on the book outlawing inter-racial marriages using religion as a basis for such prejudice:

“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races show that he did not intend for the races to mix.”  The quote is from Loving vs Virginia, from a case when a mixed race couple married in 1959 and were arrested under Virginia law.

The US Supreme Court  in 1967, unanimously overturned the Virginia law and similar miscegenation laws of 15 other states.   Persons of different racial backgrounds have been able to marry throughout the US ever since.  (reference http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_mar14.htm)

So will a Supreme Court decision ever decide the same for Gay and Lesbian’s.  Time will tell.  Time will tell.
